I am going to do something…. (future)

 

Pronoun  Example:
IAmGoing toI am going to watch television.

When you say that you are ‘going to do something’ it means that you have decided to it and is your intention to do it.

Example: I am going to buy a new handbag tomorrow. (This means that you have decided that tomorrow you are going to buy a new handbag and it is your intention to do so)

She is going to wake up early tomorrow.
They are going to run a marathon on the weekend.
We are going to invite Louisa to our party.

 

 

Something is going to happen

When we say that something is going to happen it means that we know it is sure to happen.

 

Example:  I am going to be late. (You start work at 9am. It is already 9:05 am and you haven’t left the house. You know for sure that you are going to be late)

 

  • There is going to be a rainbow in the sky. (It is sunny and rainy so you are sure that there is going to be a rainbow in the sky)

  • It is going to snow. (It is winter time, the temperature is -10 degrees so you are sure that it will snow)

  • David Cameron is going to win the election. (He has the most votes so you are sure he is going to win)
