When a number can’t be divided exactly by another number

– then you have a remainder.

 

What is 17 divided by 3?

17 ÷ 3 = 5 remainder 2.

 

Check by multiplying:

5 × 3 = 15 + 2 = 17

17 ÷ 3 = 5 r 2
