Percentages

  1.  When finding the percentage of a shape, it is important to remember that you consider the whole shape to be 100%.

2.  Then you have to figure out what each part represents – if the shape is in 4 equal pieces, each piece represents 25% and so on.

Example 1:

percentages-example1

The circle would represent 100%. It has been cut into 8 pieces – so we to find out what each piece represents we have to divide 100 by 8, which is 12.5%. 3 of pieces are shaded so this would be 37.5% shaded.

3.  When finding the percentage of a number, there are a couple of tricks that you can use – but it’s different for every percentage.

a)  You can always find 10% of a number by dividing it by 10 (this is because 10% is 100% divided by 10).

b)  You can always find 1% of a number by dividing it by 100.

c)  You can find 50% of a number by halving

4.  If you want to use a calculator to find a percentage of a number, all you have to do is write the percentage as a decimal then multiply it by that number.

Example 2:

Let’s say we need to find67% of £25.

First we write67% as a decimal – 0.67

0.67 x 25 = 16.75

So, 67% of £25 = £16.75

2) Place a tick against the percentage which is equal to 0.65

3) Tick the number equivalent to 9/100

9.0                           9.1

4)Chang 30% to a decimal and a fractionbox fractionbox

5) Can you charge these fraction into decimal fractions.
