Learning Objective :

 

Definition :

A verb is a doing word. It tells us about actions. Different verbs can be used to make your writing more interesting. Verbs can be in different tenses too.

 

Example :

I ran to the homework club at school.

I sprinted to the homework club at school.

 

Explanation :

In both sentences, we can see an action is being done. In the first sentence,

‘ran’, and in the second sentence, ‘sprinted’.

Both words are synonyms and using the word ‘sprinted’ makes our writing 

much more interesting.

What is a verb?

An action word.

A doing word.

 

Which words are verbs?

Hop fall teacher grew farmer doctor climbs slept clown library waiter Hop, fall,

grew, climbs and slept are all verbs.

 

 

Select the stronger verb.

I ate the pizza.

I gobbled the pizza.

 

I clambered up the ladder.

I climbed up the ladder.

 

I gobbled the pizza.

I clambered up the ladde.

 

Write a more powerful verb.

look

eat

hit

laugh

shout

 

Any suitable verb will suffice as an answer.

e.g. Take- grab, snatch

Look- observe, watch

Eat- gobble, chew

Hit- punch, whack, thump

Laugh- giggle, chortle, guffaw, cackle

Shout- scream, shriek
