Should

Should is a modal verb

should + infinitive

Should – We use ‘should’ when we are saying that the action is a good thing to do and is the right thing to do.

Pronoun Example
I   Example I should go to sleep now.
We   Should We should sleep early tonight.
You   Should You should finish your homework.
They   Should They should clean their bedroom.
He   Should He should listen to the Queen’s speech
She   Should She should watch the documentary channel.
It   Should It should stop raining.

Shouldn’t = Should not – We use ‘shouldn’t/should not’ when we are saying that the action is not a good thing to do.

Pronoun Example
I Shouldn’t / Should not I shouldn’t go outside because it’s raining.
We Shouldn’t / Should not We shouldn’t go to school late.
You Shouldn’t / Should not You shouldn’t play outside in the cold for too long.
They Shouldn’t / Should not They shouldn’t watch a lot of television.
He   Should He should listen to the Queen’s speech
He Shouldn’t / Should not He shouldn’t eat so much ice cream in the night.
She Shouldn’t / Should not She shouldn’t sleep late.
It Shouldn’t / Should not It shouldn’t be a problem.

  • I think I should go home now.
  • I think you should do your homework.

  • What time do you think I should come to your house?,
  • When do you think we should go out?

Must is a stronger modal verb than should.
Must has a more serious tone. Should is more gentle.

Example:

You should sleep early.

You must sleep early. – This sounds more serious. It sounds like it is an order/command and you have to do it.

Instead of saying should… we can say ought to.

Should Ought to
We should go to the cinema. We ought to go to the cinema.
I think Emma should buy a new pair of shoes. I think Emma ought to buy a new pair of shoes.
I should do my homework. I ought to do my homework.
I think Susan should invite me to her party. I think Susan ought to invite me to her party.
