Should

Should is a modal verb.


Should + Infinitive:

Should – We use ‘should’ when we are saying that the action is a good thing to do and is the right thing to do.

 

Pronoun Example
IShouldI should go to sleep now.

TheyShouldThey should clean their bedroom.
HeShouldHe should listen to the Queen’s speech

Shouldn’t = Should not – We use ‘shouldn’t/should not’ when we are saying that the action is not a good thing to do.

We say I don’t think… should…


  • I don’t think you should stay up all night.

  • I don’t think we should go to the cinema.

  • I don’t think they should stay the night at our house.

  • I don’t think mum should cook dinner for us tonight,

  • I don’t think grandma should invite everyone to her house.

  • I don’t think you should drive in the snow.

  • I don’t think Sam should be mean to Josh.

 

Do you think… should… ?


  • Do you think we should go to the cinema on Saturday?

  • Do you think I should buy this dress?

  • Do you think we should take the kids to the park?

  • What time do you think I should come to your house?

  • When do you think we should go out?

 

Must is a stronger modal verb than should.

Must has a more serious tone. Should is more gentle.

 

Example:

 

You should sleep early.

You must sleep early. – This sounds more serious. It sounds like it is an order/command and you have to do it.

Instead of saying should… we can say ought to.
