Study Guide : Changing the subject of a Formulae

Learner Guide

Changing the subject of a formuale

L .O to be able to rearrange equations to change the subject using the inverse

methods used in linear equations.

In linear equations we solved the problem by working out the value of the term

exactly in the problem. However sometimes you may not be able to work out

the exact value but instead find the value in terms of another algebraic

expression for example :

a1

This is useful in different scenarios when the value of x changes you also find out how the value of p changes. This also tests your level of accuracy when substituting different values of x.

The “subject of a formulae” is what the formula is in terms of, with this

term appearing on the left hand side of the equation.

a2

In this formulae, p is the subject, however you could write the formulae in terms of s or n.

a3

In this formulae, x is the subject it could also be written in terms of y.

a4

In this formulae, m is the subject, however you could write the formulae in terms of n.
