Percentages

When finding the percentage of a shape, it is important to remember that you

consider the whole shape to be 100%. Then you have to figure out what each

part represents – if the shape is in 4 equal pieces, each piece represents

25% and so on.

Example 1.

The circle would represent 100%. It has been cut into 8 pieces – so we to find out what each piece represents we have to divide 100 by 8, which is 12.5%. 3 of pieces are shaded so this would be 37.5% shaded.

When finding the percentage of a number, there are a couple of tricks that
you can use – but it’s different for every percentage.

1.You can always find 10% of a number by dividing it by 10

(this is because 10% is 100% divided by 10.

2.You can always find 1% of a number by dividing it by 100

3.You can find 50% of a number by halving it

If you want to use a calculator to find a percentage of a number, all you have

to do is write the percentage as a decimal then multiply it by that number.
