Changing the Subject of the Formula
L.O. To be able to rearrange formula so that a new term is the subject
The subject of the formula is simply the letter or term that is placed on the left hand side (LHS) of the formulae. For instance in the following example:
C is the subject of the formulae as it is on the LHS
Note that in the example given above and in all the formula you will come across there will be other terms in the formula itself. For instance in the example above the other term mentioned is p.
When the question asks to change the subject pf the formulae, it simply means, change what is on the LHS of the formula.
A typical example would ask:
Make p the subject of the following formulae: C = 5p + 4
The first step to changing the subject of a formula is to understand the formula itself.
Changing the subject requires you to apply the inverse operations.
This can be easily understood when drawing a flow diagram as shown below.
Example 1: F = 6p – 9 Rearrange this formula to make p the subject
Example 2 : B = 3v / 4. Rearrange this formula to make v the subject
Example 3 :S = 6f2. Rearrange this formula to make f the subject
Example 4 : D = t + ba2. Rearrange this formula to make a the subject
