Water Waves

• Water waves are an example of transverse waves.
• Transverse wave= has undulations (up and down) which are at right angles to the direction the wave is travelling in/energy transfer

• Waves transfer energy from one place to another .
• If a wave hits a surface, it is reflected = direction of wave will be changed

• If two waves meet, their displacements (amplitudes) come together = SUPERPOSITION
• Two identical crests meet = height of each wave added together = crest height doubles

identical troughs

• meet = depth of each wave added together =

trough depth doubles

• One crest and one trough meet = subtract trough depth from crest height = flat water surface
